Pouilly-Fuissé, Cuvée 1551 is a vibrant, creamy and sophisticated wine made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes from the medieval castle Château Pouilly in southern Bourgogne in France. The wine has a bright golden colour and an aromatic bouquet of honeysuckle, yellow apples, vanilla and mineral notes of wet stones. The wine is round and concentrated, with a fresh, vibrant acidity which balances the creamy mouthfeel and makes the wine appear elegant and refreshing. The palate presents flavours of acacia honey, candied lemon, pineapple and butter, and the finish is long and elegant. Serve the wine slightly chilled at 9-12 ° C with fatty fish for instance salmon and savoury seafood dishes with lots of cream and butter.
About a third of the wine ferments and matures in small, French oak barrels for 12 months, where the wine rests on the yeast deposit, called lees. The barrels are a mix of new and old barrels where 20 % of the oak barrels are new. The maturation in oak barrels brings delicate oak flavours of for instance vanilla, toast and nuts. Château Pouilly only make two wines, Cuvée 1551 and La Réserve Climat Pouilly where Cuvée 1551 is a little lighter and fresher compared with La Réserve Climat Pouilly, which is more rounded and concentrated and has more pronounced oak flavours.
Pouilly-Fuissé is one of the oldest and most well-known wine areas in south of Bourgogne and it has existed since The Roman times. It is renowned for its great white wines made from the noble grape variety Chardonnay. The medieval castle Château de Pouilly was built in the 15th century and is one of the oldest properties in the area. The wine Pouilly-Fuissé Cuvée 1551 is named after the year 1551 where the very first wine was produced at the property. The grapes for Cuvée 1551 come from vineyards of 7 hectares, located around the castle where the vines grow on calcareous soils of clay and limestone. The family Canal de Comet has been the owner of the estate for 7 generations since the beginning of the 18th century. Today the château is managed exclusively by women with the mother and daughters at the helm. The vineyards utilize products approved for organic farming exclusively and the grapes are carefully harvested by hand.
