This elegant, dry and crisp organic white from 100 % Viognier grapes, is an award-winning wine from Château Saint Estève d’Uchaux located in the Rhône Valley in southern France. The wine is aromatic, fruity, structured and fresh with rich aromas and flavours of white flowers, violet, apricot, peach and citrus. Some wines made from Viognier grapes can be rather heavy in alcohol and slightly sweet, but the style of Viognier from Château Saint Estève d’Uchaux is quite the opposite. The vivid acidity, delicate fruity notes and a long, pleasant finish is impressive and reminiscent of for instance a dry Riesling of high quality. The wine can be served chilled, but the complex and delicate notes begins to unfold at 8-10 °C. It goes well with a variety of dishes such as fish, shellfish, cheese and oven baked chicken with lemon and rosemary. Viognier is the signature wine of Château Saint Estève d’Uchaux as well as the personal favourite of Marc Français, owner and wine maker of the chateau.
Château Saint Estève d’Uchaux is a big old castle situated in the small and quite unknown wine region Massif d'Uchaux next door to the more well-known areas Cairanne, Rasteau and Gigondas, north of the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The domain owns 230 hectares of land, but most of it is completely inaccessible nature and only 50 hectares are planted with vines. On the top of the hills of the Massif d'Uchaux, the legendary Viognier vines grow in vineyards of unique soils covered with rocks of siliceous shell limestone. The winery is one of the best producers of Viognier wines in the region and Château St. Estève d'Uchaux was in fact the first house to introduce the Viognier grape in the southern Rhône Valley. The castle has been in the same family since 1809. After Marc Français took over the estate after his father in 1973, he decided to switch to organic viticulture to protect and preserve the rich flora and fauna of the region. Today all the wines from Château St. Estève d'Uchaux are certified organic.
